Check out the notes from the recent graduate program information meeting hosted by the English Graduate Office entitled "Everything you ever wanted to know about the MA/PhD Graduate Program, but were afraid to ask…." The Graduate Program Director referenced a list of questions she'd received via e-mail and through conversations with students. This is by no means an exhaustive summary but hopefully it is useful in answering some of your questions.
